Holy Communion is the practice of receiving the Sacrament of the Eucharist. The Catholic Encyclopedia states, “The Eucharist is the Real Presence of God, Jesus Christ, body and blood, under the appearances of bread and wine.” During the Holy Eucharist, we receive not just symbols but the actual body, blood, soul, and divinity of Christ. More than a mere sign, it is the living Christ we receive. The bread and wine become the actual body and blood of the resurrected Jesus Christ through the consecration.
Participating in Communion is an act of love for Christ. You are receiving Christ into your heart and soul. The Catechism says, “By this sacrament we unite ourselves to Christ, who makes us sharers in his body and blood to form a single body” (1331).
Holy Communion is for practicing Catholics who are in a state of grace, and who believe in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.
